How to…

Access Canvas as a Parent Observer

Parents can sign up for an “Observer” account which, when linked to their student’s account, will allow them to see (but not alter or submit) assignments, grades, and feedback for all of their courses.

Here’s a helpful video to guide you through the process:

Steps for creating an Observer account:

  1. Go to the Canvas login page and click “Parent of a Canvas User? Click Here For an Account.”
  2. Fill out your name, email, and desired password.  You will also be asked to provide a Student Pairing Code.
  3. In order to get the Student Pairing Code, please have your student log into his/her Canvas account, go to Account, Settings, and then look on the far right-hand side of the screen and click on the box that says Pairing Code.  Have them write the code down and give it to you so you can input it in your setup screen.
  4. Important: Once you’ve logged in, you will be prompted to configure your communication preferences . Until you do this, you may get copies of every email sent to your student by his/her teachers. Some parents like this and others find it overwhelming.

Read the Weekly Progress Report

Each week, you will receive an email reporting your student’s progress in all Williamsburg courses. The subject of the email gives a quick summary of how many of your child’s class grades are in the “green” zone (>=80%), “yellow” zone (70-80%), or “red” zone (<70%).
