Weekly Parent Email – April 1, 2022

April 1, 2022

Last week, I shared an overview of Williamsburg’s Six Mentor Practices. This week, I want to share more about the Socratic Method.

A classical liberal arts education aims at internalizing skills and habits of mind that are intrinsically good. We develop this ability through disciplined study and practice and by discussing great works of literature. It encourages questions and questioning instead of answers and answering, making the Socratic Method one of our school’s most important practices.

It’s not that we don’t value “settled” knowledge or correct answers. Instead, we place a higher value on a student’s capacity to inquire and come to a conclusion on their own. If our mentors deliver solutions—even if they are true—too quickly and authoritatively, they may become answers that are not truly answers. They may not have developed from deeply felt and wonder-evoking questioning. This is where the magic of transformational learning occurs, the art of which only the Socratic Method can properly model!

Sincerely,

Pete Jensen

Executive Director, LAU
