Weekly Parent Email – January 8, 2020

January 8, 2021

Welcome back! I hope your holiday break was rejuvenating and peaceful and that your student is ready for more transformational learning experiences this semester. As we start a fresh, new year, we have the opportunity for new beginnings.

A warm welcome to all of our new families joining us for the winter semester! We couldn’t be more excited to partner with you on your educational journey.

Warmly,

Pete Jensen

Executive Director, LAU

Action Items

New Student & Parent Orientation Recording: We had a great time kicking off the semester for new families at this week’s New Student & Parent Orientation session. In case you couldn’t make it (or want to watch it again), you can find the recording here.

Announcements

Updated course withdrawal policy: Beginning this semester, students who withdraw from a course after the 28-day drop deadline will receive an “F” letter-grade for that course. No grade will be assigned if your student withdraws within the first 10 days, and a “W” will be assigned for classes dropped between 11-28 days. You can find this full policy in the “Grading Policies: Withdrawal” section of the Parent-Student Handbook

Review of ILC attendance policy:

  • If your student is healthy, please have them attend in-person ILC classes if possible, rather than watch the recordings.
  • Please do not send your student to an in-person class if they feel sick or have COVID-19 symptoms.
  • All students, including ILC students, are required to log into Canvas each week and submit assignments.
  • If your student needs to take time off with your family, please submit an absence request form.

ACT Registration for Juniors: The Utah State Board of Education offers one free ACT to all high school juniors. LAU’s ACT testing for juniors will take place on March 24 and March 31, 2021. Please have your junior complete this form by Monday, January 11, to let us know if they would like to participate.

Online computer checkout available: All computer checkout and returns can now be initiated online from the Computer Info section on the LAU website. Please fill out the relevant form to start the checkout or return process, and we will contact you to finalize arrangements. If you have any questions or need troubleshooting, please start by reviewing the Laptop/Chromebook Handbook here.

Students needed for Yearbook Club: We would love to have your student’s input and help in creating this year’s yearbook! Meetings for this club start on January 19 and will run every Tuesday from 4:00-5:00 PM. Students can sign up in the Clubs section of Homeroom.

Changes to the LAU office schedule: Starting this month, the LAU Office in Clearfield will be open Monday-Thursday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Fridays will be by appointment only. If you are visiting the office for a computer-related need, please contact computers@latah.org. For any other office needs, please contact Suzanne Jensen. On days with severe weather, please call us at 800-200-6869 before coming to the office to make sure someone will be there.

Scholarship Opportunity for Senior Athletes: Qualified high school seniors can now apply for one of six $2,000 scholarships awarded by UIAAA this year. Details and eligibility requirements can be found here. The deadline for submissions is January 31. Please contact Shauna Larson for more information.
