Weekly Parent Update

Dear LAU Families,

You may have seen recent news about the arrest of a Utah charter school leader on serious criminal charges. The individual in question is associated with Leadership Learning Academy, a school that is in no way connected to our school, Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU).

Because of the similarity in school names, we’ve heard that some have mistakenly linked our school to this tragic situation. I want to be completely clear: LAU has no affiliation with Leadership Learning Academy or the individual involved. We are entirely separate schools, with different staff, leadership, and governing boards.

Our hearts go out to anyone personally affected by these events. News like this is understandably upsetting, and our thoughts are with the victims and their families.

If you come across any confusion in conversation or online, feel free to kindly help set the record straight. Most of all, know that our commitment to your student remains steady. We will continue to provide a safe, values-centered, and academically excellent learning environment for every family we serve.

2025–26 Registration Reminder: Registration for the 2025–26 school year is now underway, and LAU is nearing capacity! If you haven’t yet submitted your student’s Returning Student Application, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible—and register for classes right after. If you need help selecting classes, please contact your student’s school counselor.

Please note: Students who have been accepted but are not registered for classes by April 25 (today) may be withdrawn to make room for other interested students.

LAU Chromebook Returns: If your student is graduating, not returning to LAU next year, or if you do not wish to keep an LAU Chromebook over the summer, please fill out our Computer Return form to arrange a return. You have a few return options:

Clearfield Office: If you plan to drop off the Chromebook at our Clearfield office, please contact our IT Equipment Specialist in advance to make sure someone is available to assist you.

Shipping Option: If you live more than 30 miles from the Clearfield office, contact our IT Equipment Specialist to request a prepaid return shipping label.

Graduation Drop-off: Chromebooks can also be returned at LAU Graduation in Lehi, Utah, on Friday, May 23.

2025–26 Adventures Registration Update: Our popular Adventures program is filling up quickly! The Davis County group is now full and has a waitlist. If your student was hoping to join Davis County, there’s still a chance to participate—nearby groups in Weber County and North Salt Lake still have space available. We encourage interested students to register soon to secure a spot!

Digital Safety Resource for Families: Our LAU high school students have been learning about Online Relationships and Communication. We encourage you to take a moment this week to review this Digital Safety Resource and continue the conversation together at home.

Summer Reading Skills Classes: Operation Literacy, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting literacy for students from kindergarten through college, is offering in-person Summer Reading Skills classes in Layton and Salt Lake City. These programs are designed to build phonics, fluency, comprehension, reading speed, study skills, and a lifelong love of reading. To learn more, check out the Summer Reading Skills flyer.

Summit Leadership Adventure Open to Non-LAU Students: We’re excited to offer Summit Leadership Adventure to non-LAU high school students! Friends or family in grades 9-12 can now register for $850 through a self-pay option. Two sessions are available: June 2–6 (waitlist only) and June 9–13. This opportunity can significantly reduce the time and cost of higher education, giving students a valuable head start on their academic and career goals. State Testing Reminders: Thank you to all students participating in State and ACT Testing! If testing overlaps with your student’s regular classes and assignments, we recommend they plan accordingly and complete work in advance when possible. If they need extra time, they can request an extension from their mentors, who are aware of the testing schedule and happy to help.

This year, we want to intentionally recognize these invaluable contributions. In February, over ten parent volunteers helped make our Winter Formal Dance a resounding success, alongside two dedicated mentors who reinforced our strong sense of community. It’s efforts like these that strengthen LAU, and we want to show our appreciation.

Mid-Semester Assignment Deadlines: Midterms are next week! Students need to submit all assignments from the first half of the semester by the following dates:

Live Classes: March 11 by 9:00 PM MT

Self-Paced Courses: March 14 by 5:00 PM MT

After these dates and times, assignments due before midterms will lock, and late submissions will no longer be possible.

Please note that if your student fails their self-paced classes, they may not be able to take self-paced courses in the future.

New Digital Safety Courses: Attention parents! We've recently launched new Digital Safety courses in the LAU Hub. These state-required modules are designed to foster meaningful discussions between parents and students about navigating the digital world safely. Both middle and high school students will have access to three concise modules, each with flexible due dates to accommodate your schedules. While these assignments are ungraded, we encourage you to engage with them fully. Additionally, we'll periodically share family resources through the WPU to support these important conversations. Let's work together to ensure a safe and informed digital experience for our students!

Pathways to Health & Wellness with Summit Journeys Webinar: Mark your calendars! Join us for a health and wellness webinar featuring Martin Frey, Chief Adventure Officer of Summit Journeys, via Zoom on March 12 at 6:00 PM MT. Dear Parents,

As we move through the winter semester, I’d like to share some important updates regarding upcoming assessments, registration for next school year, and a helpful resource to support your student’s success.

With spring on the horizon, it’s time to turn our attention to the upcoming assessment season. This year, for the first time, all RISE and Aspire+ testing will be conducted virtually, making it easier for students to participate from home. Additionally, we’ve scheduled multiple ACT testing sessions across the state. Our Assessment Director and IT Specialist have been hard at work ensuring students have the necessary tools for a smooth testing experience. We encourage your student to participate, as these assessments are essential in demonstrating the quality of education we provide to the state of Utah.

LAU’s Open Enrollment period is closing soon, and we’d love to have your student with us for the upcoming school year! If your student plans to return, please complete their Returning Student Application to secure their spot. For more information on our enrollment process, visit our Admissions & Enrollment Procedures web page. Class registration for the 2025-26 school year will open on February 18.

New World Language Courses: Exciting news! Starting next school year, we will offer new live World Language courses: Spanish 1, French 1, and Japanese 1 & 2. Learning a new language not only enhances communication skills, but also fosters cultural understanding and opens doors to diverse opportunities. Registration opens on February 18—be sure to sign up for these new courses.

Aladdin by Ballet West Activity: Join us for a magical evening at Ballet West's presentation of Aladdin on March 27 from 5:30 to 7:15 PM MT in Salt Lake City. Registration closes March 25 or when capacity is reached. Visit our Aladdin by Ballet West web page for details and registration.

February Mental Health Minute and Counseling Updates: This month’s Counselor Update and Mental Health Minute are packed with valuable registration and student scholarship info to help your student succeed—check these resources out today!

STAR Progress Check Results Available Now: If your student completed STAR testing in January, their updated score is now available on their Renaissance dashboard. If they didn’t test in January, their August score will still be displayed. Follow these steps to access their results:

1. Go to the Renaissance Welcome Portal, select “I’m a Student,” and enter our school Renaissance ID (rp-83ca) if prompted.
2. Enter the same username and password your student used to complete their progress check. Login help is available in this document under the “Instructions” section.
3. On the Renaissance dashboard, scroll down to the Parents and Guardians section and select "Get Email Updates".
4. Click on "Progress" in the top right corner. The Star Unified Scores will be at the bottom of this page. You can find how to understand these scores and their implications in this document.

Open Enrollment Ends Soon: Open Enrollment for the 2025-26 school year at Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU) ends Friday, February 7. If you’d like your student to return this fall, now is the perfect time to complete their Returning Student Application and secure their spot at LAU. Parent Mentor Conferences: Parent Mentor Conferences begin Monday, February 3, and go until Friday, February 7. An email was sent earlier this week with instructions on how to sign up. Be sure to check your inbox for more details. If you missed the email, please contact our Customer Support Team.

No Live Classes February 6: To accommodate Parent Mentor Conferences, there will be no live classes on Thursday, February 6. Please encourage your student to take this day to study and work on assignments.

STAR Progress Check Results Available Now: If your student completed STAR testing in January, their updated score is now available on their Renaissance dashboard. If they didn’t test in January, their August score will still be displayed. Follow these steps to access their results:

1. Go to the Renaissance Welcome Portal and select “I’m a Student”.
2. Enter the same username and password your student used to complete their progress check. Login help is available in this document under the “Instructions” section.
3. On the Renaissance dashboard, scroll down to the Parents and Guardians section and select "Get Email Updates".
4. Click on "Progress" in the top right corner. The Star Unified Scores will be at the bottom of this page. You can find how to understand these scores and their implications in this document.

State Testing Insights: State testing is an important part of how LAU operates. Dear Parents,

Several years ago, our family faced a new year that felt overwhelming—we were jobless, homeless, and hopeless. I spent more than a year stuck in a cycle of discouragement until I discovered two key principles that still sustain me today:

1. Life doesn’t happen to me; life happens for me.
2. Focus on the source of opportunities, not just the opportunities themselves.

These lessons remind me of the importance of perspective—shifting my mindset to focus on approaching life’s challenges rather than simply reacting to them.

To all our LAU families rolling up their sleeves for a year of growth, here’s to a journey around the sun with just enough sorrow to cultivate joy and enough struggle to build strength.

Career and College Awareness Course for 8th Graders: The Career and College Awareness course in Canvas is a state-required, self-paced course designed for 8th-grade students. This course helps students explore various careers, understand the preparation needed for those careers, and begin planning for their next four years of high school and beyond. If your student has already taken this course, you can contact their school counselor to have it removed from their schedule. 

Registration for the ACT Workshop is Open! This prep course is available to all interested 11th-grade students and will be taught by math mentor Kathryn Garland each Tuesday in February from 3:00 to 4:30 PM MT. This non-credit course requires pre-registration, which you can complete for your student in SIS Registration under the Electives tab (search for ‘ACT Prep’). We recommend registering your student early to ensure we have enough time to ship any necessary supplies before the class begins.

ACT Resources and Information: More ACT information and practice resources are now available on our digital ACT Flyer. This flyer includes testing dates, locations, and valuable study materials. We encourage you to review these resources with your 11th grader to help them prepare effectively.

Beginning-of-Year Progress Check (STAR Testing) Results Available Now: If your student completed the Beginning-of-Year Progress Check in Math and/or Language Arts, you can now view their results on the Renaissance dashboard. Here’s how to access them:

1. Go to the Renaissance Welcome Portal and select “I’m a Student.”
2. Enter the same username and password your student used to complete their progress check. Login help is available here under the “Instructions” section.
3. On the Renaissance dashboard, scroll to the Parents and Guardians section and select "Get Email Updates."
4. Click on "Progress" in the top right corner. The Star Unified Scores will be at the bottom of this page. You can find how to understand these scores and their implications in this document.

Registration is Now Open for Summit Leadership Adventure: Summit Leadership Adventures is a life-changing, character-building, five-day high adventure experience that helps students in grades 9-12 develop leadership skills. This summer, there will be two sessions:

I live in Cache Valley, where local farmers showcase and sell the fruits and vegetables they’ve grown and harvested. I enjoy stopping at these stands and purchasing their freshly picked produce. It’s great to support hard-working farmers and enjoy the bounty they generously share!

This time of year brings to mind the Law of the Farm, as articulated by Stephen R. Covey. He emphasizes that to reap a harvest, you must prepare the ground, plant the seeds, cultivate, and water them. Covey states, “The only thing that endures over time is the Law of the Farm.”

These words resonate deeply, especially as we collaborate to educate our students and children. We must prepare their minds, planting seeds of curiosity and a desire for knowledge, and then nurture those seeds to help them develop the skills needed to think critically, learn effectively, and grow into capable adults. Both staff and parents play a vital role in making online learning productive, and your efforts truly make a difference. Following the 3-Step Parent Support Plan is a proven tool that helps nurture and support your child's academic success.

Midterms are less than two weeks away. We encourage you to work with your students to identify any assignments that need to be completed or resubmitted to help them achieve their best grades. After that, please enjoy your Fall Break together!

Adventurer Martin Frey, who led our summer Summit Leadership Adventure course, will check in with students who attended Summit Leadership Adventure this past summer. • PSAT Testing: LAU does not offer Practice SAT (PSAT) testing. If you're interested in having your student take the PSAT, we suggest contacting a local boundary school in your district soon, as this test is administered in October each year. Taking the PSAT provides valuable practice for the SAT and may also qualify students for merit scholarships. For more information about the PSAT, please visit the official PSAT website.

If you're interested in taking these tests, please coordinate with the local boundary school in your district. Those who want to learn more about the PSAT can find information on the PSAT website.

LAU Curriculum Review Committee:  LAU is seeking four more parent volunteers to participate in our curriculum committee for any Reproductive Health Systems (RHS) curriculum updates. August 30 is the LAU Add/Drop Deadline! Within the first two weeks of the semester, students must determine whether they want to continue, drop, or modify their classes. When reviewing your student’s course load, please note that middle school students must take at least five LAU classes, while high school students must take at least six each semester.

Sign up for New 2024-25 Courses Today! We’ve expanded our class offerings for LAU students! Please review each option below carefully, as each of the courses may have different registration deadlines. Then, please use the Add/Drop feature in SIS if you wish to add or drop a class.

• Funded Approved LAU Math Options: Our School Land Trust (SLT) committee has allocated funds to cover the cost of either Mr. D Math or Teaching Textbooks Math. If your student is interested in one of these options, please review the Funded Approved LAU Math web page and register them in SIS by Tuesday, August 20. Your child must also select their preferred math curriculum in Canvas by the same date.

As the new school year begins, I’m reminded of Meindert DeJong's, The Wheel on the School, a story about a small Dutch school in the Netherlands. The children in the book set out to solve the mystery of why no storks visit their village, discovering along the way that "Sometimes when we wonder, we can make things begin to happen."

• LAU Back-to-School Night: Join us for our Back-to-School Night on Thursday, August 15 from 6:30 to 7:30 PM MT! Students and parents are invited to join us for staff introductions and a Q&A. This event is a perfect opportunity to meet LAU staff and ask questions before the school year starts. The Zoom link will be emailed to parents and posted in the LAU Hub one day before the event.
• Williamsburg Back-to-School Kick-Off: LAU students and parents are also welcome to attend the Williamsburg Back-to-School Kick-Off on Thursday, August 15 from 1-2:30 PM MT! Join other families and students for games and the chance to meet with your student’s mentors. Parents will receive an additional Zoom link for this event in the same email as the Back-to-School Night email, which will be sent out the day before.
• Help Wanted! Join the LAU Curriculum Review Committee:  LAU is seeking parent volunteers to participate in our curriculum committee for any Reproductive Health Systems (RHS) curriculum updates or guest speakers. This role involves minimal time commitment but is crucial if updates are needed. If you’re interested or if you have questions, please contact our Communications Specialist, Sharla Nelson.

New Courses for the 2024-25 School Year: We're excited to announce that we’re expanding our class offerings for LAU students! After reviewing the new options, if you wish to add or drop a class, please use the Add/Drop feature in SIS. Parents can now register their students for the following classes:

• Funded Approved LAU Math Options: For the 2024-25 school year, our School Land Trust (SLT) committee has allocated funds to cover the cost of either Mr. D Math or Teaching Textbooks Math. LAU will cover the cost of one of these math programs for your student. If your student is interested in one of these options, please review the Funded Approved LAU Math web page.

• AP Courses Offered by UC Scout: Our SLT committee has also allocated funds to cover the cost of AP Courses through UC Scout, a University of California student preparation and partnerships program. We encourage Juniors and Seniors who are interested to visit our UC Scout AP Courses web page for more information.

Dear LAU Families,

Thank you for another fantastic school year! We are excited to see the largest graduating class in the history of Leadership Academy of Utah. It is an honor to work with our families and students, and we hope you plan to continue your student’s educational journey with us. 

As a reminder, please make sure to submit your student's application for the 2024-25 school year in SIS if you haven't already done so. This will enable us to register your student for classes for the upcoming year before the current school year ends. If you have questions about how to do this, you can reach out to our Registrar, Angela Maloy, by email or call customer support at 385-343-4111.

Additionally, I wanted to share some exciting new educational resources for our families. Beginning the 2024-25 school year, the School LAND Trust Committee has endorsed the following new opportunities for our students. If you would like to learn more about enrolling your student in the following opportunities, please email me, John Tripp, to begin the process.

1. Free AP Courses (UC Scout)
   UC Scout is an online program that provides quality courses, including Advanced Placement (AP) classes, that are designed to be consistent with the College Board's guidelines. LAU will pay the costs for any student to enroll in an AP course through the UC Scout program. This opportunity saves $800 per course for interested students. Enrolling in this program enables students to earn collegiate credit and have a high-quality academic experience. Interested parents can learn more by visiting the UC Scout’s website and course offerings webpage.
2. Math Resources
   In addition to the amazing AP options, the School LAND Trust Committee has approved the following math resources for our students: Mr. D Math, Alecks Math Support, and IXL Math Support. Participating in these resources allows students to grow mathematically and achieve greater academic success.
3. Math Tutoring
   The School LAND Trust Committee is committed to supporting student math achievement through after-school tutoring with our WL mentors. We will begin to offer after-school math support from 3 to 5 PM MT. More information about this will be provided in August.

Finally, we value our partnership with parents to provide our students with the very best educational experiences. Again, we are especially grateful to our School LAND Trust Committee for their efforts to connect parents and students to high-quality resources. Laptop and Chromebook Returns: If your student has an LAU laptop or Chromebook and you wish to return it, or if your student won't be returning to LAU next year, please complete the 2023-24 Laptop Return, Exchange, or Incident Report form. When doing so, please indicate when you intend to return the device. Return locations are one day only at the time identified in the return form. If preferred, laptops can be returned during office business hours or mailed to the Clearfield office. In-person attendance is limited to seniors and their confirmed number of guests. LAU & WL Lagoon Day: Next week, LAU and WL celebrating the end of the school year at Lagoon Amusement Park on May 22, from 9:30 AM-4:00 PM MT in Farmington, UT. Dear LAU Families,

When we are in the thick of the school year January feels like a false summit at our house. Then, here comes May! It feels so natural to give a shout when we complete a school year. A shout of joy, a shout of relief. As a board, we understand these celebrations come in a variety of parties. We understand work, health, and relationships are competing for the attention of our students and their families. This is why LAU was created for families. We aim to provide a whole family education that allows students to become their best future selves. We hope your families will return year after year, and that you will bring your friends, and create TLEs alongside one another at Leadership Academy of Utah.

As parents we are bricklayers for homes we will never live in. We are raising the parents of our grandchildren! Legacy work feels more transcendent at the change of seasons. Don't save up celebrations for later. No matter how fantastic or how disappointing the finish, the future can always be brighter than the past. Our lives are made of new beginnings.

Mandatory Laptop Returns: At LAU, we are committed to providing a great education for our students. This includes proving the latest technology available. As part of an inventory rotation, we are removing all Lenovo, Acer, and Dell laptops from our inventory and replacing them with Chromebooks. If your student has an Acer, Dell, or Lenovo laptop, please fill out this inventory form by May 10th and indicate if you would like to purchase your student’s laptop (if available) or return it at the end of the school year. If you would like to buy your student’s laptop, payment is required upon receipt of a confirmation email.

Surplus Laptops for Sale: As we rotate our inventory, it is expected that we will have surplus Acer and Dell laptops available for $100 per laptop. These laptops are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you are interested in purchasing one laptop or more, please fill out this purchase form. Please note that payment is required upon receipt of a confirmation email.
