At this time of year you will notice multiple surveys being sent out and an increase for your feedback. We encourage you to take time to complete these surveys so we can continue to improve and build our students. Please watch for and participate in the following surveys:

Student Course Evaluation Surveys Now Open: Student Course Evaluation Surveys are now live in your student’s Homeroom Canvas course. Your student’s feedback helps us improve our curriculum, mentoring, and our live and self-paced courses each year. Please remind your student to complete their surveys by Monday, April 27.

April Mental Health Minute: This week's Mental Health Minute focuses on the power of hope. Take a few minutes and discuss with your student how having hope can improve their outlook and help them through difficult times.

End of the Year Lagoon Event: Students and families are invited to join us for a day at Lagoon Amusement Park in Farmington, UT, on Wednesday, May 20, from 9:30 AM-4:00 PM MT. Enjoy a fun-filled day at the park as we celebrate the end of another great school year! Registered participants will receive a promo code to purchase tickets at a discounted group rate. New Mobile Friendly SIS Update! We are introducing a refreshed look and feel for our Student Information System (SIS) with a more mobile-friendly design and improved navigation. Dear Parents,

This past Friday, I had the opportunity to meet with several student groups from our Adventures courses. Hearing students share their goals and aspirations was a powerful reminder of the purpose behind our work. I am continually inspired by their commitment to growth and to making a positive impact in their communities.

Since course registration season is upon us, I want to highlight a few valuable opportunities available to Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU) students. These programs provide a strong head start on higher education while offering meaningful tuition savings:

• Early College and AP Courses: Available through our partnerships with higher-education institutions in Utah and Idaho and the Williamsburg Family of Schools.

• Local Technical Colleges: Students can attend programs in their area with our support.

We are also accepting applications for our Summit Leadership Adventure course, taking place June 8-12. This all-expenses-paid experience—valued at over $1,000—offers students the chance to learn from adventurer Martin Frey and his team. Throughout the week, students will participate in experiences designed to foster meaningful personal growth and will have the opportunity to earn a leadership certification through the Seven Habits organization. To register your student for this unique opportunity, contact the LAU registrar.

The LAU Board and I are excited about the direction our students are heading. We remain committed to creating an environment where they can grow, learn, and serve.

2026-27 Class Registration Reminder: Fall registration is open, and classes are filling quickly. All returning students must complete registration by Friday, May 1. Students who have not completed their schedules by this date may be considered non-responsive and dropped from Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU).

Counselors are currently approving schedules, so if you need to make any changes, please do so as soon as possible. If you have questions, please contact your student’s counselor.

Supporting a Member of our LAU Community: We are heartbroken to share that one of our beloved science mentors, Dave Rees, recently lost his son after a tragic accident. Our thoughts are with Dave and his family during this incredibly difficult time. A GoFundMe page has been created to support the Rees family. Thank you for keeping them in your thoughts and for any support you can give.

March Mental Health Minute #2: This month’s second Mental Health Minute focuses on why high expectations matter and how emulating strong leadership can positively shape your student’s growth. Take a few minutes to review it with your student today.

Join the LAU Board! We are currently accepting applications for new LAU board members. If you are passionate about the online and alternative education LAU provides, please consider joining our governing team. To apply, please complete the Board of Directors Application.

Continuing State Testing: State testing is underway and will continue throughout the month of April. Please review the 2025-26 Testing Schedule and help your student plan their coursework during the weeks they will be testing. If you have any questions or concerns about your student’s testing, please contact our Assessment Director, Ashley Cabrera.

Ballet West Activity: LAU students, parents, and friends are also invited to join us for an evening at the ballet to see West Side Story on Thursday, April 9, from 6:30-8:45 PM MT. Dear Parents,

As technology becomes an increasingly important part of students’ daily lives and education, helping them navigate the digital world safely is a priority we all share. While the internet offers incredible opportunities for learning and connection, it also presents challenges that require proactive monitoring and open communication.

To support families in this effort, we would like to share guidance from the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) on the Safe Use of Technology. These resources are designed to help families protect students from online risks such as privacy concerns, digital permanence, and exposure to inappropriate content.

Strategies for Monitoring and Safety

The following best practices can help you create a safer digital environment at home:

• Set Clear Boundaries: Establish "device-free" times and zones, such as during meals or before bedtime. Discuss the "why" behind these rules so students understand they are for their safety and well-being.

• Utilize Built-in Tools: Before looking into third-party software, consider built-in features such as Apple’s Screen Time or Google Family Link. These tools allow you to set time limits and approve app downloads.

• Utilize Third-Party Filters: While the school maintains digital filtering on school Chromebooks, personal devices are not filtered. Ensuring all devices have content filtering can help create a safer online environment. For additional information about third-party filtering options, contact our Computer Specialist, David Olsen.

• Discuss Digital Permanence: Remind students that anything shared online—even in “private” messages—can be permanent. Once a photo or message is sent, it is no longer within their control.

• Protect Personal Information: Teach students never to share passwords, their location, or school details with anyone online.

• Model Healthy Habits: Students often mirror the behavior of adults in their lives. Managing our own screen time and practicing digital courtesy sets a powerful example.

Open Communication: The "Safety Plan"

Technology changes rapidly, but a strong relationship remains the most effective filter. We encourage parents to:

• Start Early: Make digital safety a regular, low-stress topic of conversation.

• Focus on Trust: Let your student know that if they encounter something that makes them feel uncomfortable, pressured, or scared, they can come to you without fear of losing their device or getting in trouble.

• Recognize Red Flags: Discuss how to identify "grooming" behaviors, such as strangers offering gifts or asking for private photos.

Daylight Saving Time Reminder: Daylight Saving Time (DST) starts this Sunday, March 8. Since Utah observes DST, your student’s class schedule will remain the same, but clocks at home may need adjusting. Remind your student to adjust any personal clocks or alarms so they’re on time and ready to learn on Monday!

Join the LAU Board! We are currently accepting applications for new Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU) board members. If you are passionate about online and alternative education and want to help extend the LAU experience to more students, please consider joining our governing team. Mid-Semester Assignment Deadlines: Midterms are next week! Students in both Live and Self-Paced classes must submit all assignments from the first half of the semester on Friday, March 13, by 5:00 PM MT. After this deadline, midterm assignments will lock, and late submissions will not be accepted.

Please note: if a student fails their Self-Paced classes, they may not be eligible to take Self-Paced courses in the future.

Service Day at the Provo Rec Center: Join us next Saturday, March 14, for a meaningful day of service and fun! Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU) students, families, and friends are invited to help assemble life-saving vests for individuals experiencing homelessness. The day begins with a Chick-fil-A lunch at 12:00 PM MT, followed by an inspirational message from the founder of the Turtle Shelter Project. Parent Mentor Conferences and Updates Now Available Anytime: As you may have heard, we’ve removed the scheduled once-a-semester Parent Mentor Conference and Update (PMC and PMU) week to give you more flexibility. Now, you can reach out to your student’s mentor directly anytime in SIS—no need to wait for a specific week! This change gives you faster access to support when your student truly needs it.

To message your student’s mentor in SIS:

1. Go to the 'My Students' tab in the Personal Menu.

2. Select your student and open the 'Classes' tab.

3. Click your student’s mentor in the 'Mentor' column.

4. Type your message and click 'Send Message'—that’s it!

Winter Mental Health Seminar with Martin Frey: Your student is invited to join us on Thursday, March 26, at 3:00 PM MT for a special Mental Health Seminar during Inspiration Hour with Summit Journeys leader, adventurer, and youth advocate Martin Frey. He will present on “Brain Health—what it is and how to maintain it,” sharing practical insights to help students strengthen their mental and emotional well-being. Encourage your student to attend this informative and inspiring presentation!

LAU Chromebook Fix: To ensure your student’s Chromebook continues running smoothly, all students using an LAU-issued device must fully shut down and restart their Chromebook to launch an important CK Express update. Please have your student complete this restart as soon as possible.

If your student plans to participate in Adventures next year, be sure to register for Adventure Foundations. Updated information is now available on our Adventures web page. Online State Assessment Practice Sessions: State testing at LAU is administered virtually, and we want every student to feel confident and prepared. That is why we are requiring all students to attend one mandatory practice session. This session gives your student the opportunity to become familiar with the testing platform and format, and it allows our team to confirm communication through the testing portal so everything runs smoothly on testing day.

Our State Assessment Director, Ashley Cabrera, will email parents directly with sign-up details. When you receive the email, please select the day and time that works best for your student. We appreciate your support in helping your student prepare.

Emergency Preparedness and Response Resources: This week, we emailed daily Emergency Preparedness and Response resources to help Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU) families get ready for a variety of potential emergencies. If you haven’t already, we encourage you to review these tools as a family to stay ready for the unexpected.

Dear LAU Parents and Families,

Thank you for partnering with us during our recent in-house Middle of Year STAR Benchmark Assessments. These assessments are initiated and used by the Williamsburg Family of Schools to help measure student growth over time and guide instruction moving forward. Mentors use these results to custom-tailor instruction to support individual student learning.

These benchmarks are valuable for students, parents, and mentors alike—allowing everyone to see growth over time and identify areas of needed improvement, both overall and individually.

Reading: Overall, students showed strong growth in reading this cycle. Our median Student Growth Percentile (SGP) was 63, which is 13 points above the expected growth. Additionally, the average percentile rank increased from 73 to 77, meaning students are continuing to perform well compared to peers nationwide.

Math: Math growth was also encouraging. While the expected median SGP is 50, our students achieved a median SGP of 59, indicating above-average growth. The average percentile rank rose significantly from 63 to 73, reflecting meaningful improvement across the group.

Overall, these results show that students are making solid academic progress in both reading and math. We will continue using this data to celebrate growth, identify areas for support, and tailor instruction to meet students’ needs.

Individual student STAR Benchmark reports are available now in SIS. We encourage parents and students to review this information, celebrate growth, identify any areas of concern, and discuss ways to support continued progress. Meanwhile, LAU and Williamsburg will also be reviewing this important information and planning how we can help students continue to grow and succeed.

Open Enrollment for the 2026–27 school year ends today, February 6! Students are not automatically re-enrolled each year, so if your student plans to return this fall, this is the best time to complete their Returning Student Application in SIS. For more information, visit our Admissions & Enrollment web page.

Note: If LAU exceeds its maximum number of applications during Open Enrollment, all returning students will be admitted, while new students will go through our lottery process.

Declare Dual Enrollment for Spring Semester: If your student is taking a high school course outside of LAU this semester (not including early college or tech school classes), please complete our Dual Enrollment Form. Completing this form helps us accurately record outside credits on your student’s transcript.

Utah Health Standards for Health I & II: Public feedback requested! The state writing team has completed a draft of the revised Health Education Standards, as required by H.B. 281. Educators and parents are invited to review the proposed changes and share input through the Public Feedback Survey. We encourage all parents to participate before Saturday, February 21.

Open Enrollment for the 2026-27 school year ends soon: Open Enrollment for the 2026-27 school year at Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU) ends next Friday, February 6. Students are not automatically re-enrolled each year, so if your student plans to return this fall, now is the time to complete their Returning Student Application in SIS. Declare Dual Enrollment for Spring Semester: If your student is taking a high school course outside of LAU this semester (not including early college or tech school courses), please complete our Dual Enrollment Form. Completing this form helps us accurately record outside credits on your student’s transcript.

Utah Health Standards for Health I & II: Public feedback requested! The state writing team has completed a draft of the revised Health Education Standards, as required by H.B. 281. Educators and parents are invited to review the proposed changes and share input through the Public Feedback Survey. We encourage all parents to participate before Saturday, February 21.

Parent Mentor Conferences and Updates Now Available Anytime: We’ve removed the scheduled once-a-semester Parent Mentor Conference and Update (PMC and PMU) week to give you more flexibility. Now, you can reach out to your student’s mentor directly anytime in SIS—no need to wait for a specific week! This change gives you faster access to support when your student truly needs it.

To message your student’s mentor in SIS:

1. Go to the ‘My Students’ tab in the Personal Menu.

2. Select your student and open the ‘Classes’ tab.

3. Click your student’s mentor in the ‘Mentor’ column.

4. Type your message and click ‘Send Message’—that’s it!

LAU Parents and Families,

Transformative Learning Experiences (TLEs) are the anchor to education at Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU). Our curriculum, Socratic discussions, and adventures all offer opportunities for TLEs. These learning experiences create emotional attachments to growth and goodness while building confidence in our students. Confidence is the basic building block for moral imagination and the birthplace of desire. As Napoleon Hill stated, "Desire is the starting point of all achievement, not a hope, not a wish, but a keen pulsating desire which transcends everything."

As a Board, we are thrilled to support a new opportunity that our graduating seniors can use to move their desires forward into their next achievements. We are passing the hat around to partner with families, alumni, and business donors in this endeavor. The Legacy Learning Scholarship is a cash scholarship offered to every LAU graduating senior who completes the application.

There are no requirements tied to grade point averages or college plans. It is an extension of trust and belief in the students' educational experience and their capability to choose an imaginative and transformative next life step. Examples could be education, travel, certifications, supplies, starting a business, or funding a ministry.

Students, we invite you to complete the application. Parents, we invite you to contribute to the fund monetarily or support the scholarship by purchasing from the soon-to-open merch store, with proceeds going directly to the scholarship fund.

The voyage from childhood to adulthood is filled with peril and adventure, and that’s what makes the grown-up world worth aspiring to. We are educating students and families to become the heroes of their own story, and we happily champion their journey.

School Safety/Emergency Preparedness: In accordance with R277-400, LAU maintains emergency preparedness and response plans. Because we are an online school, we use a non-traditional LAU Emergency Plan for Families, which includes resources for parents and students to review and implement at home. Please note that these resources are provided as guidance and may not cover every family’s situation.

LAU also has emergency plans specific to in-person Adventure courses and school activities. The safety of our students and staff remains a top priority.

To support these efforts, LAU will host an Emergency Preparedness and Emergency Response Week from February 9-13, featuring reminders and resources for staff and families. More information on this event will be available soon.

Middle of Year (MOY) Benchmark Assessments: MOY Benchmarks for 9th–11th-grade students will be available in Canvas starting December 15. These required assessments must be completed before live classes begin on January 7, as finishing them unlocks access to your student’s other Canvas courses.

We’ve set aside January 5-6 as dedicated Benchmark work days, but students can start as soon as they’re ready. Knocking them out early is a great way to begin the winter semester strong! Additional details will be sent via email next week—stay tuned.

Dear Parents,

We are really excited to announce the new Legacy Learning Scholarship. I am grateful to the Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU) Board of Trustees for establishing this new scholarship. The goal is to provide all qualifying seniors who complete the application with financial support in their next learning endeavor.

This is a unique scholarship, as every qualified senior who applies and completes the full application will be considered for a financial award. The scholarship application is challenging, but it provides students with opportunities to reflect on their past educational experiences, their individual strengths, and their future goals and pathways. Please contact our school counselors if you have any questions regarding this scholarship opportunity.

This scholarship provides a unique opportunity that will positively impact the lives of our students. We invite our parents to participate in the ongoing development of these scholarship funds. More information will follow as we continue refining this perpetual scholarship opportunity.

We are also excited to offer our 9th-12th-grade students our Summit Leadership Adventure camp once again. As before, the cost will be covered by LAU, and we invite our high school students to sign up. The sessions will begin in the first and second weeks of June. Space is limited, so please register as soon as possible!

Finally, I want to express my appreciation to Williamsburg Learning. We have a new five-year contract with this outstanding educational provider, and we look forward to many more years of educational excellence! I'm excited to see the progress of each of our students and the success that results from their hard work and determination. Dear Leadership Academy of Utah Families,

We want to celebrate the incredible work our students are doing in our online program. We are thrilled to see the vast majority of our students actively engaged, turning in assignments, and making a dedicated plan to succeed. Your partnership plays a huge role in this, and we are proud of the community we are building together.

In an online environment, parent support is crucial, and we are committed to providing you with the best resources to help your student thrive. We want to highlight our 3-Step Parent Support Plan, which is detailed in our Parent Video Library. This library is full of resources, including videos on the science of motivation and developing willpower, all designed to help you support your student's journey.

We also want to emphasize an important part of the learning process: failure. As students learn to manage their time and master challenging subjects, they will inevitably face setbacks. This is not only normal but essential for growth. Some of the most profound learning happens when students analyze a mistake, adjust their approach, and try again. As educator John Dewey said, “Failure is instructive. The person who really thinks learns as much from his failures as from his successes.” We encourage you to help your student see failure not as an end, but as a powerful teacher.

The Counseling Update highlights LAU’s upcoming post-high school possibilities meetings, scholarship opportunities, and other important academic guidance. New Digital Safety Course Section: Last month, middle school students and parents explored Healthy Digital Habits, learning about app traps, addictive design, and how these impact digital habits. The course now moves on to Privacy and Safety, covering topics like social engineering and online deception. We encourage parents and students to review these resources together in the LAU Hub and discuss the importance of staying safe online.

Every Kid Outdoor Adventure Challenge: Get your kids outside and exploring with the Every Kid Outdoor (EKO) Adventure Challenge. This free, year-long program for youth ages 5-18, designed by the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation, encourages kids and families to enjoy nature, learn new skills, and complete fun monthly activities across all four seasons. Daylight Saving Time Reminder: Daylight Saving Time (DST) ends this Sunday, November 2. Since Utah observes DST, your student’s class schedule will remain the same, but clocks at home may need adjusting. Remind your student to adjust any personal clocks or alarms so they’re on time and ready to learn on Monday!

• Doodle for Google Scholarship Contest: Open now through Wednesday, December 3, this contest invites students to celebrate their unique strengths through original artwork for a chance to be featured on Google’s homepage. • Story Con In-Person Event: Join aspiring writers at Story Con on February 27-28, 2026, at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, UT. These assignments are not for credit and are designed to be conversation starters for students and their parents, siblings, or friends to help them understand how technology is influencing them and the measures they need to take to remain safe. 2025 Annual Core Standards Survey: Each year, the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) administers an annual survey seeking feedback from educators, parents, students, and other interested community members on Utah’s Core Standards. The survey provides the USBE with key insights into the potential need for revisions to the current standards. You can review the current standards by visiting this page, and complete the survey by October 31. The results are expected to be reported to the Standards and Assessment Committee on December 5, 2026.

Dear Leadership Academy of Utah Parents,

We’re thrilled to share the highlights from the 2024–25 Ends Policy Report, reflecting a year of remarkable student success, dedicated mentorship, and meaningful school growth. Your partnership is invaluable, and we deeply appreciate your active involvement in the Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU) community.

This year, we achieved significant milestones that reinforce our commitment to academic excellence and preparing principled leaders:

• Top-Ranked Online High School: For the third consecutive year, LAU was named the #1 Best Online High School in Utah for 2025 by Niche.com.
• Highest Graduation Rate Ever: We achieved our highest graduation rate, which allowed us to exit state oversight through the Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) plan.
• Increased College Readiness: Our students earned the highest number of collegiate credits in school history, with 124 Concurrent Enrollment (CE) credits earned by seniors.
• Improved Junior ACT Scores: Scores showed significant improvement, with increases of over 2% in every subject.
• Strong Community Engagement: Enrollment grew to 509 students, a 2.6% increase from the previous year, and 100% of surveyed parents reported feeling welcome at LAU.
• High Satisfaction: Students gave mentors an average rating of 4.41 out of 5 and courses a rating of 4.48 out of 5 for overall satisfaction.

While celebrating our successes, we remain focused on areas for continued improvement and growth, guided by your feedback. Our goals for the coming year include:

• Boosting Math Achievement: Increase student performance on state math assessments by 10% and raise the percentage of 11th-grade students meeting the ACT math benchmark to 40%.
• Graduation Achievement: Increase the number of students who complete their graduation requirements.
• Collegiate Course Access: Expand access to collegiate opportunities, allowing students to earn credits toward both higher education institutions and Applied Technology Colleges.

Without your support, feedback, and dedication, these milestones would not be possible. We are incredibly grateful for your partnership and look forward to continuing to collaborate with you to provide a vibrant and enriching educational experience. Step into the scene of a wedding-turned-crime and help uncover the culprit by searching for clues, interviewing witnesses, and piecing together the mystery. Guests are encouraged to dress in their best wedding attire.

Thank you for helping us launch the 2025-26 school year with so much energy and connection! As a virtual school, opportunities for our students to connect in person are incredibly meaningful for building friendships that go beyond the screen. Your participation in our recent kickoff events has set a wonderfully positive tone for a new year of growth, leadership, and learning.

Splash Summit Adventure

The school year kicked off with a fun-filled event at Splash Summit Waterpark. We had the best turnout yet for a kickoff event, with 257 guests in attendance! I enjoyed seeing each of you at the entrance gate. It was the perfect way to enjoy one last summer adventure together, as students and families cooled off on the slides and water features, shared meals, and engaged in conversation. The afternoon was filled with fun and connection, creating memories that will surely carry forward into the school year.

Welcome Back Carnival

Our celebrations continued with one of the largest events in our history, the Welcome Back Carnival on Friday, August 29. It was fantastic to see 265 guests come together in Kaysville, UT, for an evening of fun. The carnival was packed with activities, including face painting, a food truck, game booths, and balloon animals.

A special thank you to our student leaders who helped make the event a success. Our Class Presidents greeted families at the entrance, while the Burger Meets team skillfully ran the game booths and handed out prizes. The highlight for many was the dunk station, where we kept the crowd laughing as mentors bravely took turns getting soaked by students. We also extend our gratitude to Board Member Jeff Walsh for his key assistance at the dunking station!

The entire evening was a reflection of the strong, supportive community we have at Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU).

SafeUT: SafeUT is a free, confidential support for parents and students 24/7. It brings together expert resources and licensed counselors and makes it easy to submit safety concerns. We encourage families to review the SafeUT website together and download the app for quick access when needed.

Thursday Night Activities: Each Thursday, students can connect with peers and get inspired through our alternating events—Thursday Night Live and Inspiration Hour. These weekly gatherings are a fun way to engage with the Williamsburg community while fueling personal growth. The Zoom link can be found on the front page of your student’s Homeroom Canvas course. Encourage your student to join each week and make the most of these events!

State Testing Registration: As a public charter school, Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU) participates in required state testing each spring. To help you prepare, we’ve created grade-specific letters that include important information and the registration steps for your student. Please read the letter that applies to your student and complete the registration form inside:

6th–8th Grade: RISE Registration

9th–10th Grade: Aspire+ Registration

11th Grade: ACT Registration

Students with significant cognitive disability: DLM Testing

Completing registration early supports the extensive planning and coordination that state testing requires and ensures the process runs smoothly for your family.

LAU Families,

August is always energetically charged with lots of new beginnings. It is a new season for all of our interests: college football, harvest, hunting, high school athletics, theater, and so forth. I have a daughter who is a seasonal expert. She categorizes movies, books, foods, drinks, and activities as natural to their season and gently encourages us to live seasonally. This can lead to some comical moments as a family when we try to cross into another season too early!

I think we can all benefit from L.M. Montgomery's words in Anne of Green Gables: "It's been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly that you will." As a board, we are grateful for the exceptional administration, staff, mentors, and families that create Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU). With Montgomery’s words in mind, we will enjoy every experience in this upcoming school year. Our minds are made up!

August 29 is the LAU Add/Drop Deadline! Students have 14 days from the start of the semester to determine if they want to continue with, drop, or change a class. When planning your student’s course load, please note that middle school students must enroll in at least five classes, while high school students must enroll in at least six.

SORA Online Library: SORA is a digital reading app with e-books and audiobooks for K–12 students, including some Williamsburg course books. All students can access this resource by following the instructions on our SORA Online Library web page.

Assessment Insight for Parents: The state of Utah requires LAU to administer certain tests each year in order to receive funding. These assessments also give us valuable data to evaluate our programs and better support student success. The more students participate, the more accurate and useful the information becomes—helping us make stronger decisions for our school community.

Dear LAU Parents,

The 2025–26 school year is officially underway! We’re excited to see new and returning faces in our Zoom rooms and look forward to joining your student on their educational journey.

As Mentors and support staff, our greatest desire is to support you in educating your students. Our mentors are licensed, well-trained, highly qualified, and they genuinely care. We focus on teaching students how to think, not just what to think, and know that working with you leads to the best outcomes.

We ask for your help in setting your student up for success this year. Research shows that students are more successful when parents are actively involved in their education. Below are four focus areas that can greatly boost your student’s success:

FOCUS #1: Help Students Create a Quiet Area for Class and Homework

A quiet, distraction-free area helps students focus during class and while completing homework in Canvas. Each live class is only 50 minutes long, so a dedicated space allows them to be fully present and get the most out of their learning time.

FOCUS #2: Encourage Note-Taking

Note-taking improves learning, concentration, and memory. Active note-taking during class and while reading deepens understanding and helps students recall material for out-of-class assignments. Encourage note-taking to become a habit by providing adequate notebooks and offering praise during your weekly check-ins with your student.

FOCUS #3: Establish a Regular Reading Routine

Our educational model centers on interactive classes, engaging discussions, meaningful projects, and the original works of history’s greatest thinkers—making reading essential. While not all students love to read, what they read forms the foundation for learning. Students are best prepared when they read in advance and take their own notes on the material. Spreading reading throughout the week, rather than cramming into long sessions, improves engagement and preparation.

FOCUS #4: Implement the 3-Step Parent Support Plan

We have seen great success from parents who implement the 3-Step Parent Support Plan with their student. Following this plan can positively impact your student’s learning and often turns parents into co-mentors in the process. When parents, mentors, and support staff work together, we can better ensure student success.

Order Your Student’s Fall Books! Parents are responsible for ordering all books through our Amazon book order process. For step-by-step instructions, visit our Ordering Books & Materials web page. ​​If you need help, contact the LAU Supply Coordinator after you have your book list ready and have confirmed your shipping address in SIS.

Student Orientation and Benchmark Assessments: To ensure your student starts the year off strong, they must complete Orientation in Canvas. Students in grades 6–11 must also take three Benchmark Assessments in Canvas. These assessments are used internally to help personalize your student’s learning experience and improve our course curriculum.

If they haven’t already, please work with your student to complete these assignments as soon as possible. Additional details about Orientation and Benchmark requirements are available on Page 6 of the LAU Welcome Packet.

Update to Digital Literacy (MS) and Digital Studies (HS) Requirements: In April 2025, the LAU Board approved that students can earn a Digital Literacy/Studies credit by completing LAU live online classes, rather than taking a separate Digital Literacy/Studies course. This change takes effect this school year (2025-26).

The following comes directly from the Digital Studies Requirements Policy:

Middle School Students who successfully complete five credits (one school year) of LAU online courses will be awarded the 0.5 credit required for the Digital Literacy Credit.

High School Students who successfully complete six credits (one school year) of LAU online courses will be awarded the 0.5 credit required for the Digital Studies Credit.

Note: “Successfully complete” means the student earned a C- or higher in their LAU live online courses.
